Eng. Hussein Abdullahi Yalahow’s journey with SIMAD University began in 2004, during one of Somalia’s most challenging periods due to the civil war. The country was in turmoil, and Mogadishu, where SIMAD is located, was at the heart of the conflict. Despite these difficult conditions, his experience at SIMAD University was transformative, laying the foundation for his personal and professional success.
From 2004 to 2008, Hussein, along with his peers, faced extreme adversity. SIMAD University endured significant hardships—facilities were limited, resources were scarce, and even basic necessities like reliable electricity and proper classrooms were often unavailable. The constant threat of gunfire and bomb explosions became part of their daily reality. There were many days when it was simply too dangerous to attend classes, with roadblocks, armed clashes, and insecurity making travel nearly impossible.
Despite these dire circumstances, the collective will to learn remained strong. SIMAD University became a beacon of hope for the students, symbolizing the possibility of a better future beyond the conflict. The resilience shown by both the students and faculty during these years was extraordinary. Education was more than just a pursuit of knowledge—it became an act of defiance against the chaos and instability surrounding them.
The role of SIMAD’s management and teachers was crucial in sustaining this hope. Their unwavering dedication to education, even during the most unstable periods, ensured that students like Hussein could continue their studies. Teachers went above and beyond, often holding extra sessions whenever security permitted, while the administration adapted to the ever-changing security landscape by rescheduling classes and ensuring students’ safety was always a priority. Their efforts fostered a sense of unity and resilience that enabled the students to persevere.
This support during those challenging years deeply shaped Hussein’s perspective on facing obstacles in both life and career. SIMAD’s leadership demonstrated that with determination, even the most difficult situations could be overcome. After completing his studies at SIMAD in 2008, Hussein began his professional journey in Hargeisa as a software developer with Orbit, a telecom company. His time there allowed him to refine his technical skills and gain valuable experience in problem-solving and innovation. In 2009, he returned to Mogadishu to contribute to various projects before traveling to Kismayo to train staff on a system his team had developed, further broadening his expertise in system implementation and capacity building in the technology sector. In 2010, Hussein co-founded Himilo Solutions with colleagues in Hargeisa. The company became the first Somali enterprise to develop a comprehensive Hospital Management System, a pioneering effort that significantly transformed the healthcare industry in Somalia. As co-founder and Managing Director, Hussein has led Himilo Solutions through an era of innovation and growth. Today, Himilo Solutions serves countless customers across Somalia, including cities like Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Kismayo, Bosaso, and Baidoa. The company has grown from a small startup into a leading enterprise, helping improve healthcare services through technology solutions.
In 2015, Hussein’s connection to SIMAD University came full circle when he enrolled in their Master of Project Management program, delivered through Open University Malaysia. He completed the program in 2018, further enhancing his project management skills, which have been instrumental in leading the continued success of Himilo Solutions.
As SIMAD University celebrates its 25th anniversary, Hussein reflects with deep gratitude on the role the university played in his life. From providing an education during a civil war to equipping him with the knowledge and skills that have shaped his career, SIMAD has been more than just a university—it has been a force for resilience, hope, and progress in Somalia. SIMAD University’s commitment to education, even in the face of great adversity, stands as a testament to the transformative power of learning. For Hussein, and countless others like him, SIMAD was the platform that helped them rise above adversity and contribute to the rebuilding of their country. As SIMAD marks this milestone, Hussein is proud to be part of its legacy and looks forward to seeing the university continue to inspire and empower future generations.
