Garad Yusuf Mohamud, known as Garad Qowqabo, has built a remarkable career, emerging as a significant leader in the Galmudug State of Somalia. Graduating in 2014 with a degree in Public Administration from the Faculty of Social Science at SIMAD University, Garad’s journey is a testament to the power of education, resilience, and leadership in creating lasting change.

Educational Foundations and Early Aspirations

Garad’s academic journey began at SIMAD University in 2014, where he became the first student registered for the Public Administration program as a part-time student. Enrolling at SIMAD fulfilled a long-held ambition for Garad, who was deeply motivated to pursue higher education at a university known nationwide for its quality and rigorous academic standards. His friends, inspired him to join the university’s  which is known for its reputation and excellence, which became a life-changing step. At SIMAD, Garad’s enthusiasm for learning saw him not only excel academically but also become actively involved with the student unions, serving his peers and honing his leadership skills.

Through his studies, Garad gained critical knowledge and skills, which transformed his personal and professional outlook. SIMAD University instilled in him a robust understanding of governance and public administration while building his confidence to tackle real-world challenges. This experience would serve as a cornerstone in his journey, giving him the tools he needed to take on leadership roles that would impact Galmudug and Somalia at large.

Stepping into the Public Sphere: Galmudug State Formation

Just months after graduating, Garad took on a role with the Galmudug State Formation Committee as a facilitator, contributing to the critical process of state formation. His involvement in this committee was pivotal, working with other leaders to shape and stabilize the emerging Galmudug State. Garad’s commitment to the process showcased the skills and dedication he had cultivated at SIMAD University, marking his first significant step into public service.

Rising in the Ranks: Galmudug State

Garad’s impact on Galmudug governance continued to grow when, on June 22, 2015, he became a Member of Parliament for Galmudug State. At a young age, Garad was one of the youngest members, bringing fresh perspectives and a sense of commitment to his role. Quickly earning the respect of his peers, Garad was appointed as the Chairperson of the Finance, Economy, Business, and Industry Committee. In this influential position, he worked diligently to create policies and strategies to improve the economic landscape of Galmudug. In December 2022, Galmudug State President Ahmed Abdi Karie appointed Garad as the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, marking a significant advancement in his career. As a cabinet member, Garad’s role expanded to oversee one of the state’s most critical sectors, promoting sustainable fishing practices, preserving marine resources, and boosting economic opportunities through fisheries. His work has already begun to impact the state positively, demonstrating his commitment to improving livelihoods and promoting responsible resource management in Galmudug.

Garad’s journey from SIMAD University to ministerial office illustrates the transformative power of quality education and leadership.
