Mustafa Sheikh Abdullahi, Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Local Government, and Reconciliation in the South-West State of Somalia, reflects on his journey and achievements as a member of the SIMAD University community. He began his studies at SIMAD University in 2012 and graduated in February 2016 from the Faculty of Social Science, Department of Public Administration. During his time at SIMAD, he was deeply involved in extracurricular activities, including the SIMAD Student Representative Council, which later became known as SIMAD Government—a name change he helped consult on. His connection with the institution continues professionally, as he currently works closely with SIMAD Government.
The education and experiences gained at SIMAD have played a crucial role in his career development and his contributions to society. He emphasizes the impact of volunteerism instilled by SIMAD, leading him to positions of leadership, including his current role as Director General at a state government level in Somalia. His studies in public administration directly align with his responsibilities in the public sector, where he finds great satisfaction in contributing positively to his community.
One notable success story he shares involves his early experiences with elections. As Director General, he now oversees district council elections, a mandate that reflects a journey that began with chairing SIMAD University’s first “one student, one vote” election as the chairperson of the electoral commission during his final year. This experience gave him foundational skills he now applies in leading elections at the national level, contributing to inclusive, accountable election processes—critical to mitigating political challenges in Somalia.
He recalls with appreciation the lessons instilled by his lecturers at SIMAD, particularly the importance of thorough preparation and prioritisation. He applies the principle, often cited by SIMAD’s rector, of putting 90% effort into preparation and 10% into delivery. This method has contributed to his reputation for effectiveness in high-level meetings, resource mobilization forums, and coordination efforts. Additionally, the prioritisation approach learned from SIMAD has guided him in addressing complex issues such as security, governance, and stabilisation, ensuring a focus on interdependencies and community needs.
As a dedicated member of the SIMAD alumni association, he actively participates in initiatives like the Young Graduate Program, which provides fresh graduates with valuable training and skills development. He also regularly delivers voluntary lectures to current SIMAD students, sharing insights into the job market’s challenges and opportunities.
His reflections underscore the value of the skills, ethics, and dedication fostered by SIMAD University. He is proud to see the institution’s growth and looks forward to its continued impact on Somali society and beyond. In his message to SIMAD University on its 25th anniversary, he extends congratulations to the leadership, faculty, students, and alumni, celebrating their shared achievements and the bright future that lies ahead.
