“I am Ilyas Sheikh Ahmed, proudly serving as a Member of Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament for the 11th Parliament term (2022–2026). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from SIMAD University, and later earned my MBA from a university in Malaysia. Recently, I completed my second Master’s degree in Peace, Governance, and Development from the United Nations University for Peace. My professional journey has been equally diverse, including time as a lecturer at SIMAD University and the founding Director of the Adado Learning Center, an initiative I spearheaded in central Somalia’s Galmudug State.
My association with SIMAD University began in 2013 when I graduated at the top of my class. SIMAD’s rigorous recruitment process, rooted in merit and excellence, gave me the opportunity to join the institution right after graduation. Even though I transitioned from my formal role in 2017, the bond I share with SIMAD remains unbroken. The university’s alumni, including its current rector, are close colleagues, and we often reconnect at major events like the recent Ramadan Iftar, where we celebrate our shared experiences and support for the university. SIMAD isn’t just an academic institution—it’s a community, a family that continues to thrive beyond the classroom.
The Transition from Academia to Public Service
My career path initially took me to the humanitarian sector, where I worked with Action Against Hunger (ACF) from 2007 while pursuing my part-time studies at SIMAD. Juggling work and education was challenging but rewarding, and I continued to serve both fields until 2017, when the demands of my humanitarian work prompted me to step down from my academic role. It was through my extensive engagement in humanitarian efforts, often collaborating with various levels of government, that I found myself gravitating toward public service.
Politics was never a planned destination, but the trust placed in me by my community led me here. When a parliamentary seat in my constituency became vacant due to a federal appointment, I was urged by friends and community members to step forward. My reputation—built over years of working in NGOs across both rural and urban areas—had established a foundation of trust. Without extensive campaigning, I was elected to the Somali Parliament. Thirteen months into this role, I reflect on the honor of serving my country and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as I prepare for reelection.
The Enduring Impact of SIMAD University
An education is more than the sum of its academic lessons; it is a foundation of character, confidence, and purpose. I recently came across a study that found a disconnect between one’s academic specialisation and professional work can lead to a loss of 25–30% of the knowledge gained during university. However, the true value of an education lies not just in knowledge retention, but in the sense of empowerment it instills. SIMAD University graduates carry with them a deep sense of resilience, determination, and courage, equipping them to excel regardless of their chosen path.
The impact of SIMAD is visible across Somalia. While I may not have precise statistics, I can say with confidence that SIMAD alumni hold significant positions in government, the private sector, civil society, and even the military. This influence stems from SIMAD’s commitment to excellence. As a proud member of the SIMAD family, I have maintained strong ties with the institution and its alumni since I left in 2017. This network—a community of high-caliber individuals—supports each other in professional and personal spheres alike. The reputation of SIMAD graduates precedes them, whether in government offices or corporate boardrooms, and it is a reputation built on integrity and excellence.
I’ll share a story that illustrates this perfectly. A friend of mine, a high-ranking official in the Somali government, recently confided in me about his recruitment practices. He shared that while his values of integrity and transparency remain unchanged, one thing has shifted—he now hires SIMAD graduates wherever possible. Not out of favoritism, but because SIMAD graduates consistently demonstrate excellence and integrity, qualities he trusts and values above all else. This is the caliber of individuals SIMAD produces, and it’s a testament to the institution’s ability to nurture talent and instill core values.
A Legacy of Meritocracy and Excellence
SIMAD University stands out as an institution committed to meritocracy and equal opportunity. Its recruitment is based on talent and achievements, not connections, and this ethos of fairness fosters a culture of excellence. The university invests in the future of its staff and students through advanced degree sponsorships and professional development, empowering them to reach their full potential.
The SIMAD alumni network is a powerful testament to the university’s influence across various sectors. These graduates serve as ambassadors for SIMAD’s values, excelling in their fields and contributing meaningfully to Somalia’s development. While every institution may have occasional underperformers, they are the exception, not the rule. SIMAD graduates are held to the highest standards, and their collective reputation for excellence reflects the values of their alma mater.
I take immense pride in being part of the SIMAD family. It is a bond that endures, rooted in shared values and a commitment to excellence, contributing to the social and professional fabric of our nation.”
